Pleney telecabine Lift Information Summer 2013

The latest information regarding the Pleney and other lifts for the Summer 2013 Season.

Morzine mountain bike lift information summer 2013.

Morzine: Super Morzine OPEN Friday 28th June - 1st September. Accessing the larger part of the Portes du Soleil bike area; This comprises the Linderets, Chatel, Morgins, Champoussin, Champery and Les Crosets linked areas - 23 bike lifts in total are OPEN for Summer 2013.

Les Gets: TC Mont Chéry, TS Express Chavannes, TS Nauchets OPEN Saturday 15th June - 8th September.

Morzine: Pleney - CLOSED for the 2013 Summer season. PLEASE SEE ANNOUNCEMENT BELOW FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

Prices: 2013 prices here - 92EUR for 6 days and around 23EUR for a day pass.

I will be posting regular updates here. Myself and the other summer operators in Morzine are in contact with the Tourist Office consulting on alternative arrangements for the Pleney.

Monday 25th March 2013 - "Solutions are being explored to ensure mountain biking from June 8 onwards Morzine and Les Gets. Meetings are planned soon (Thursday 28th March - Phil), with the participation of municipalities Morzine and Les Gets, as well as representatives from the ski lifts of Morzine, Avoriaz and Les Gets. More precise information will be sent to this issue from March 30, 2013." - Morzine Tourist Office.

Thursday 21st March - PLENEY TELECABINE ANNOUNCEMENT (Please check back for updates or contact me directly regarding the alternative arrangements under discussion).

This announcement has just been released (Thursday 21st March) regarding the Pleney lift for the summer of 2013 (direct quote follows).

“Due to the renewal of its cable car, Pleney will be closed during all of summer 2013 (subject to the building permit acceptance).

But “La Crusaz” (for the sledge activity) and “La Pointe de Nyon” chair lifts (for the pedestrian activity) will be open.

Other options are currently under consideration to maintain MTB activites from the 8th of June from Morzine to other Portes du Soleil resorts and Les Gets.

More detailed information will be provided from the 30th of March. Thanks for your understanding”

This deviates from the previously stated position of the Pleney lift opening from 28th June for the Passportes du Soleil event until August 24th. Replacement work on the lift had been planned to take place during the month of June. In previous years the Pleney has opened weekends early June and all week from around the middle of June onwards until the first weekend in September).

As per the announcement there is currently no news on any possible alternative service to reach the Les Gets riding area. There would only be two options; running the adjacent “La Crusaz” and “des Mouilles” chair lifts for bikes or providing a bus service.

There is still the caveat that the planning permission for the replacement works may not be approved although I suspect it will be.

Today (Friday 22 March 2013) myself and a number of other summer operators have been in contact with the director of the Morzine Tourist board to express our surprise and disquiet regarding the nature of the announcement and more specifically it’s timing (late.)

Effect on riding – (in the absence of alternative arrangements to reach Les Gets)

PLEASE NOTE SUPER MORZINE LIFT WILL BE RUNNING AS NORMAL JUNE 28th – SEPTEMBER 1st. This means the bigger percentage of the riding area is still open as normal and it really is a massive area.

Access to Les Gets on downhill bikes will not be practical without a vehicle.
Access to Les Gets on trail/Enduro bikes will mean a 20min pedal up the road although there is an easy off road route which would take a little longer. It’s a gradual climb gaining approximately 200m vertical between Morzine and Les Gets.
Increased pressure on the Super Morzine lift (open 28th June – 1st September) accessing the wider Portes du Soleil area; Linderets, Chatel, Les Crosets and Champery. Lift queues are not such a big issue in the summer, maximum wait time would be 20-30minutes at the bottom of Super Morzine during the Passportes event weekend (at all other times it’s usually normal to walk straight on without queuing).
There is no mention of a reduction in lift ticket prices, I suspect there will be none.
On a more positive note; Les Gets is the smaller part of the Portes du Soleil riding system, the largest proportion of the riding, be it bike park style courses or singletrack/cross country/trail riding is accessed via Super Morzine lift. I would say around a 30/70% split in favour of Super Morzine in terms of riding area. It is a massive area, the trail system itself once away from Morzine can soak up many more riders and the queues at other lifts in the system should not be significantly affected.
If riders chose the 20 minute pedal to Les Gets then there is still a large chunk of high quality riding to be had, both natural trails and bike park style courses.
Once in Les Gets the return to Morzine by multiple routes is downhill.
By my calculations there are still 21 lifts available to mountain bikers around the Portes du Soleil system (not counting Pleney and the Chavannes and Nauchets lifts in Les Gets although the latter two are still running.)
The trails on the Pleney will only be rideable as a one off hit on a return from Les Gets. In practice this affects the downhiller side of things more than the trail/enduro/cross country rider.
